What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.

Glow-in-the-dark walkway is an amazing new nighttime lighting solution

“Starpath” is the name of a resurfacing methodology being developed by Pro-Tech Surfacing. Positioning the product as an alternative to street lighting, the U.K. company designed the material using solar technology that absorbs UV rays during daylight hours and emits the collected energy as a nighttime glow. The material is sprayed onto existing infrastructure, creating a lighting solution that does not require electricity. It is also cited to have minimal impact on neighboring facilities, thus reducing any light pollution that resulted from traditional street lights. The product is going through an initial trial at a park in Cambridge, England. Check out this online video to see the product in action. The technical aspects of Starpath are surely innovative, but the appearance of the glowing and sparkling walkway may be more magical then technological.
